Red Wiggler Composting WormsRed Wiggler Worms

We purchased our red wiggler worms locally from a worm farmer right outside of Dallas, Texas.  If you can try to buy locally if possible to help promote your local economy, and also to reduce the stress on the worms from long shipping. If you find a local worm farmer on line, contact them to see if you can pick your worms up instead of paying for shipping.  If you do order your worms online, be sure you know exactly when they will arrive so that you can be home to set them up in their new home as soon as possible.  With the heat rising this summer, you do not want them to set on your front porch all day.  You might be disappointed to come home to a box of "worm pie" especially if you live here in Texas like us. Everything outside just bakes.

Types of Composting Worms

Red Wiggler Worms (Eisenia foetida) The most common type of composting worm.  Red wigglers swallow the organic material, digest it, extract its food value and expel the "poop" as worm castings. Worm castings are a valuable product for gardening use because they are rich in nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium.
