Growing Fruit in North TexasFruit and Berries that grow well in North Texas. You may have already found this out the hard way...just because a local nursery or plant super store sells a fruit plant it does not mean that it will grow in your area. I found this list when researching which berry, fruit and nut trees to plant in North Texas. The list was updated in January 1999. I have not been able to find a more current list but when I do I'll post it. The original list was prepared by the Collin County Extension Services, based on 800-900 hours of chilling, to determine which cultivars will perform well in this specific area of Texas for several years. Whenever possible, plant several cultivars for the fruits you are trying to grow to kinda- hedge your chances of getting good fruit crops. Please note that just because its on the list does not mean it will definitely produce fruit or that if a plant is not on the list it will definitely not produce fruit in your area. This information is part of the research I found while trying to plant our homestead. The last two pieces of advise I have is: 1. Make sure that in addition to making notes of the common name of the fruit plant be sure to write down the botanical name because different companies will come up with "names" for the same botanical named fruit, which makes them difficult to find sometimes. 2. Read the labels on the fruit plants to see if any or what type of pollination is necessary. Sometimes you will need to plant muliple of a plant or other plants near by so they will cross pollinate. As we plant different fruits I'll post which worked well for us. If you find some that work well for you, please email us so we can share the information.
